As the Cotswolds settle into a quieter rhythm, villages glow with firelight and winter markets fill cobbled squares. From countryside trails to Christmas lights and seasonal feasts, there’s plenty to experience over the coming months. Whether you’re planning a festive break or a last retreat before the year ends, here are some of the best things to do across the Cotswolds this season.
Autumn Walks and Woodland Trails
This is one of the most beautiful times to explore the Cotswolds. The Cotswold Way offers far-reaching views from the escarpment, while Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (Tetbury) is breathtaking as the maples turn gold and crimson. Visit early or at dusk for a sense of calm before the festive season begins. Batsford Arboretum, near Moreton-in-Marsh, also offers gentle paths through Japanese acers and evergreens — ideal for a peaceful winter stroll followed by coffee in the garden centre café.
Markets and Seasonal Fairs
Late autumn marks the return of the region’s markets and Christmas events. Stroud Farmers’ Market continues every Saturday with local produce and gifts from Gloucestershire makers. Cirencester’s Christmas Market brings music, food stalls and festive lights to the Market Place on selected dates across late November and early December.
Jolly Nice Farm Shop, near Frampton Mansell, hosts “A Taste of Christmas” on Thursday 20 November 2025 (6–8pm) — an evening of tastings, festive bakes, cheeses and deli favourites, plus an in-store discount. It’s a relaxed way to start the season and pick up gifts and provisions.
Festive Light Trails and Family Events
Poppy Fields by Luxmuralis, Gloucester Cathedral (17–25 October 2025; 6:15pm entry, last entry 8:45pm)
An immersive after-dark installation from Luxmuralis, returning after 2023’s sell-out Light Eternal. Projection, music and recorded poetry (including readings by Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne) reflect on the sacrifices of the First and Second World Wars and invite a moment of remembrance, peace and hope. The Royal British Legion will be present each evening for donations towards the Remembrance season.
Westonbirt Arboretum — Enchanted Christmas (selected evenings, 28 November–31 December 2025)
A magical after-dark trail through Westonbirt’s treescape, with brand-new light installations for 2025 and Relaxed Sessions on select dates. Expect festive food cabins, mulled drinks and plenty of photo moments under the illuminated canopy.
Blenheim Palace — Christmas at Blenheim (14 November 2025–3 January 2026)
One of the UK’s most spectacular winter experiences: a themed palace interior, artisan Christmas market and the famous illuminated trail through the grounds. A full day out that works for couples and families alike.
Family favourites also include the Cotswold Farm Park light trail and Sudeley Castle’s Spectacle of Light (check individual dates), both running on selected evenings through late November and December.
Winter Dining and Firelit Pubs
Few things feel more quintessentially Cotswold than settling beside a roaring fire after a long walk. Favourites include The Woolpack Inn (Slad) for valley views and seasonal plates; The Potting Shed (Crudwell) for a modern country menu and cosy corners; and The Porch House (Stow-on-the-Wold), one of England’s oldest inns — perfect for a winter evening.
For something different, Pit Kitchen (Cotswolds) launches its Winter Menu from 6 November and stays open through the colder months — think indoor spaces, fire pits, blankets and wood-fired cooking that suits stormy evenings.
Days Out and Experiences
Beyond the festive sparkle, the region’s workshops and distilleries offer creative ways to spend a day. Daylesford Organic runs candle-making, wreath workshops and seasonal cookery through November and December, while the Cotswold Distillery near Stourton offers guided tastings — a warming pause on a crisp day.
Where to Stay
After a day exploring, return to one of Arlington & Row’s curated homes.
For gatherings, The White Hart (Leonard Stanley) offers generous space, a hot tub and open-plan living — ideal for festive celebrations. Banksia Cottage (Cleveley) is a peaceful, minimalist retreat surrounded by countryside walks. Loveview Cottage (Painswick) suits a romantic winter stay, with calm interiors and a wood-burning stove.
